Clos de L’Obac

Pioneers of the Modern Priorat

Clos de l’Obac is one of the historic names behind the rebirth of Priorat. The estate was founded by Carles Pastrana and his family under the project Costers del Siurana, at a time when the region was still largely unknown outside Spain. Together with a small group of visionary producers, they helped restore Priorat’s reputation and demonstrated the extraordinary potential of its rugged vineyards. Currently the projects are run by the son of Carles, Guillem Pastrana.

The vineyards are located on steep terraces carved into the hills of Priorat, where vines grow in the region’s distinctive llicorella soils. This fractured black slate, mixed with quartz, forces the vines to root deeply in search of water and nutrients. The result is naturally low yields and grapes of great concentration. The harsh landscape, combined with the Mediterranean climate and significant diurnal shifts, creates wines with both power and remarkable freshness.

Depth, Structure and Mediterranean Character

The wines of Clos de l’Obac are built around the classic grape varieties of Priorat. Garnacha and Cariñena form the backbone of the blends, often complemented by small amounts of international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Syrah. These combinations create wines that balance Mediterranean richness with structure and longevity.

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve fruit purity and careful extraction. The wines are then aged in French oak barrels, where they slowly develop complexity, structure and integration. Oak ageing is an essential element of the style, giving the wines depth without overshadowing the character of thefruit and the mineral signature of the slate soils.

Clos de l’Obac wines are known for their intensity and elegance. They show layers of dark berries, Mediterranean herbs and graphite, supported by firm yet polished tannins. Despite their concentration, the wines maintain freshness and balance, reflecting both the dramatic landscape and the pioneering spirit that helped shape modern Priorat.
