Domaine Etienne Sauzet

A Benchmark of Puligny-Montrachet

Domaine Etienne Sauzet is one of the most revered estates of Puligny-Montrachet and a reference point for great white Burgundy. The domaine was founded in the early 20th century by Etienne Sauzetand has remained deeply tied to the village ever since. Today the estate is runby Benoît Riffault, who continues to refine the house style with a focus on precision and vineyard expression.

The domaine farms an exceptional collection of vineyards in and around Puligny-Montrachet. Holdings include village parcels as well as several prestigious Premier Crus such as Les Combettes, Champ-Canet and La Garenne, alongside Grand Crus including Bâtard-Montrachetand Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. The soils are dominated by limestone and marl, giving the wines their hallmark tension, mineral drive and remarkable ageing potential. Vineyard work is meticulous, with increasing emphasis on biodynamic practices to preserve soil vitality and terroir transparency.

Elegane Through Precision

The wines of Domaine Etienne Sauzet arededicated almost entirely to Chardonnay. The goal is to capture the purity and finesse that define Puligny-Montrachet rather than pursuing richness or power.

Fermentation takes place in French oakbarrels, followed by ageing on the lees to build texture and complexity. The proportion of new oak varies depending on the appellation, with Grand Cru wines seeing a higher percentage while village wines are treated more delicately. Throughout the process, the use of oak is carefully balanced to support the structure of the wine without overshadowing the character of the vineyard.

The resulting wines are known for their precision and refinement. Aromas of citrus, white flowers and stone fruit a relayered with subtle notes of hazelnut and fresh butter. On the palate they combine vibrant acidity with remarkable depth and minerality. Domaine Etienne Sauzet produces Chardonnay of great elegance, capable of evolving beautifully with age and standing among the finest expressions of Puligny-Montrachet.
