Hickinbotham

Historic Hills of Clarendon

Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard is one of the most historic vineyard sites in McLaren Vale. The estate was planted in 1971 by Dr. Alan Hickinbotham in the elevated Clarendon subregion, an area known for producing wines of exceptional structure and complexity. Located highin the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges, the vineyards benefit from both altitude and cooling breezes that moderate the warm South Australian climate.

The soils are composed of shale, ironstone and clay, which provide both drainage and structure for the vines. These hillside vineyards allow the grapes to develop concentration while maintaining balance and freshness. Today the estate is part of the Jackson Family Wines portfolio, which has invested in preserving the unique identity of this historic site.

Single-Vineyard Precision

Hickinbotham focuses on classic Bordeaux and Rhône varieties that thrive in the Clarendon hills. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot form the backbone of the estate’s wines, each expressing the structure and depth typical of this elevated terroir.

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to allow careful extraction and preservation off ruit character. The wines are then aged in French oak barrels, where they develop structure and complexity over time. The proportion of new oak varies depending on the cuvée but is always used to complement rather than dominate the wine.

The wines are known for their power and precision. Cabernet Sauvignon shows dark cassis, graphite and fine tannins, while Shiraz offers black fruit, spice and savoury depth. Hickinbotham produces wines that combine the richness of McLaren Vale with the refinement that comes from high-altitude vineyards.
