Poggio Antico

High Altitude Vision in Montalcino

Poggio Antico is one of the highest estates in Montalcino and has long been recognized for producing Brunello with remarkable elegance and freshness. The winery is located on the southwestern slopes of the appellation, where vineyards sit between roughly 450 and 500 meters above sealevel. These elevations create cooler growing conditions and significantday–night temperature differences, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly while preserving natural acidity.

The soils around Poggio Antico arediverse, consisting of limestone, clay and galestro. This combination provides both structure and aromatic complexity to the wines. Since its founding in the 1970s, the estate has developed a reputation for meticulous vineyard work and astrong focus on expressing the character of this unique hillside terroir.

Refined Brunello from Sangiovese

Poggio Antico works exclusively with Sangiovese for its Brunello di Montalcino wines. The vineyards are carefully managed to achieve balanced ripeness while maintaining the vibrant acidity that defines great Brunello.

Fermentation takes place intemperature-controlled tanks, allowing precise extraction of colour and tannins. The wines are then aged in oak barrels, where they develop structure and complexity over time. The duration and type of oak used varies depending onthe cuvée, but the goal is always to support the natural character of Sangiovese rather than dominate it.

The wines show classic Brunello aromatics of red cherry, plum and dried herbs, layered with subtle spice and earthy notes. On the palate they combine firm yet refined tannins with fresh acidity and a long, elegant finish. Poggio Antico produces Brunello that balances power with finesse, offering a clear expression of Montalcino’s high-altitude terroir.
