Poggio di Sotto

A Reference Point in Southern Montalcino

Poggio di Sotto is widely regarded as one of the most revered estates of Brunello di Montalcino. The winery is located near Castel nuovo del l’Abate in the southeastern part of the appellation, an area known for producing some of the most refined and aromatic expressions of Sangiovese. Founded in 1989 by Piero Palmucci, the estate quickly gained a reputation for wines that combined purity, structure and exceptional ageing potential.

The vineyards are situated between roughly 200 and 400 meters above sea level and benefit from a unique micro climate influenced by nearby Mount Amiata. The soils consist primarily of galestro and marl, which give the wines both structure and aromatic complexity. Careful vineyard management and low yields are essential to maintaining the balance and elegance that define the estate’s wines.

Traditional Brunello with Precision

Poggio di Sotto produces wines exclusively from Sangiovese, focusing on a traditional interpretation of Brunello that emphasizes finesse and longevity. Harvesting is carried out by hand with rigorous selection to ensure only the best fruit is used.

Fermentation takes place in large wooden vats with extended maceration, allowing the wine to develop depth and structure while preserving aromatic purity. The wines are then aged for several years in large Slavonian oak casks, a method that supports slow maturation and integration without dominating the character of the fruit.

The wines are known for their remarkable elegance and complexity. Aromas of red cherry, wild berries and dried flowers are layered with subtle notes of spice and earth. Fine tannins and vibrant acidity give the wines exceptional balance and ageing potential. Poggio di Sotto produces Brunello that stands among the most refined and sought-after expressions of Sangiovese in Tuscany.
